What’s (strongly) expected
Lineup & timing
- Four models again: iPhone 17, a new ultra-thin “Air,” 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. Multiple reports say Apple is dropping the “Plus.” Launch event is widely tipped for September 9, 2025, with sales later in September, though Apple hasn’t sent invites yet.
Design
- Subtle redesign across the range, with a particularly thin “iPhone 17 Air.” Pro models are rumored to switch materials (aluminum/titanium mix talk varies by report) and slim down bezels. Expect refreshed camera bump shapes on the Pros.
Displays
- The big news for non-Pro buyers: 120 Hz ProMotion is rumored to come to all models at last. Sizes may shift slightly, with ultra-thin emphasis on the Air. Anti-reflective, tougher cover glass is also rumored.
Cameras
- Pros are tipped to add a 48 MP telephoto (joining the 48 MP main), upgraded low-light processing, and improved selfie camera (reports point to 24 MP). Expect continued long-range optical zoom on the Pro Max.
Performance & battery
- A next-gen A19 Pro chip (likely 2-nm class) for the Pro phones with a focus on on-device AI and graphics; more RAM on Pros (reports point to 12 GB). Battery life gains should come from efficiency rather than huge capacity jumps.
Connectivity
- Wi-Fi 7, satellite SOS improvements, and of course USB-C continue. Some chatter persists about Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, but that’s less certain.
Software & AI
- Shipping with iOS 19 and “Apple Intelligence” features expanded from last year, with more on-device models enabled by the A19 Pro and higher RAM ceilings on the Pro phones.
Likely strengths (if rumors pan out)
- High-refresh displays for everyone: This alone could make the base iPhone 17 feel like a major upgrade from older non-Pro models.
- Bigger AI headroom on Pros: More RAM + A19 Pro should unlock fuller Apple Intelligence features without cloud fallbacks.
- Telephoto gets serious: A 48 MP telephoto would help close the zoom gap to rivals.
Potential weak spots / open questions
- Design changes sound evolutionary (outside the ultra-thin Air), not radical—so upgraders from iPhone 15/16 Pro may see modest physical differences.
- Apple 5G modem: If it doesn’t arrive this year, Qualcomm modems likely continue—reliable, but not the “all-Apple” story some expect. (Speculative.)
- Event timing is still unofficial: Multiple outlets converge on Sept 9, but we’re waiting on Apple’s invite.
Early buying advice
- Coming from iPhone 12/13/14 non-Pro: Very likely a big upgrade (display smoothness, cameras, battery, USB-C, AI features).
- From iPhone 15/16 non-Pro: If you value 120 Hz and camera gains, the base 17 may be your sweet spot.
- From 15/16 Pro: Wait for reviews—performance and camera tweaks look meaningful but not guaranteed “must-upgrade” leaps. Recent commentary suggests expectations should be tempered.
